ant192 Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 I've just got a V6 2001 ghia gal, (168,000) and was really happy with it until a light started blinking at me. The engine warning light started flashing when the engine was under load. Now it's not flashing but constant and the v6 is idling rough and rough at low revs. I filled her up with a tank of asda petrol (95) just before the fault, could it be that? Will i muller it if i keep driving? Can't really afford silly garage prices just to find out what is wrong, but i imagine that there is more expertise on here than at the grease monkey's anyway?Any help appreciated - if anyone has a fault reader and half an hour anywhere near brighton theres a bottle of wine in it! mk2vr6 Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 sounds like a coil pack as gone U/S, if you continue to use it the unburnt fuel can in extreme case damage the cat! Quote
ant192 Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 yeah, i kind of suspected coil pack from reading other posts on here. So now i need to find out which one! I have read about a technique spraying the engine with water mist in the dark to find arcing, Is that right? where abouts in the engine bay do i look? Can i find the fault using a multimeter? Again, thanks for any and all help Quote
mk2vr6 Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 water spray technique is a AAA engine job yours has a different system, one coil pack per plug, you can unplug them one at time and see if the problem gets worse or stays the same? then replace the packs that have failed! there was a recall on these coil packs! due to their failure rate! it maybe worth while seeing if yours have been replaced under it? Quote
MrT Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 If you get someone with an engine code reader or VAG-COM a faulty coil will show up on the system as "Misfire Cylinder X". This happened to me and I confirmed the faulty coil by swapping them and the reported misfire moved to another cylinder. Around 2001, Bosch produced a faulty version of these coil packs, (I have put the details of the relevant part numbers somewhere on this forum about 2 years ago) and these were recalled by VW in various countries around the world. Needless to say Ford UK did not recall them and would not consider replacing them outside of warranty. I replaced all six coils and have not had problems with them since. One thing to be very carefull about is the wiring plugs that connect to the coil packs, they clip on and can easily be broken, if you do break them you cannot buy a new plug, you have to get the whole wiring harness which is very expensive. ant192 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Report Posted March 23, 2008 Thanks for all the replys! How good of ford - it's not even like they can deny the problem if VW recalled them. I'm gonna unplug the coil packs and from that i should be able to tell the offending one. At risk of sounding stupid, (i've only had it a week though!) are the coil packs the 6 plugs on the top of the engine block? I can just unplug them right? Quote
ant192 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Report Posted March 23, 2008 No joy! think i may invest in Vag-Com, not wanting to tempt fate but i may well need it in future. Is there anyone near brighton that has a lead i can borrow? If not then which of the leads on ebay should i pluck for? Quote
El Dingo Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 (edited) FFS, why do people go to Ebay for VAG-COM?They do have a web site... http://www.ross-tech.com/index.html (If you are in Berkshire soon I have VAG-COM.) Edited March 23, 2008 by El Dingo Quote
stevie m Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 FFS, why do people go to Ebay for VAG-COM?They do have a web site... http://www.ross-tech.com/index.html (If you are in Berkshire soon I have VAG-COM.) I have not bought VAG-COM for the gal but i would think that most people believe that ebay is cheaper than ross tec. I would recommend them checking all places first as sometimes you are paying a bit more for things on ebay and people don't realise that things can be found cheaper elsewhere (by the way i have not checked for prices). gregers Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 ant i do know someone who is a senior diagnostic technician with all the kit,who might be able to help you(dunno how much he would charge)BUT HE KNOWS HIS STUFF. Quote
ant192 Posted March 24, 2008 Author Report Posted March 24, 2008 Everything when t*ts up today, took it round the literally corner to pick up kids, came back to it and it wouldn't start. It would fire for like two seconds and then die. Called out RAC who could not find out why it would not start. Towed to garage and find out tomorrow - my credit card is quivering with fear. The RAC man plugged in his diagnostic equip (saved me a job at least) and found P0102 (MAF), P0302 (no 2 misfire) and P0321 (?). He said neither of those faults would prevent it from starting. Only had the bloody thing a week!! I thought VW engines were reliable :( Quote
ant192 Posted March 24, 2008 Author Report Posted March 24, 2008 Ah, just had a thought while reading other threads. When i parked up the car i tried to pull out the key with the auto box in gear. Obv it doesn't let you do this and when i yanked it hard the key stayed in and the remote key bit came off the key. When i realised, i put the box in P and put the key back together. Would the engine have failed to start because the key had lost it's code? I'd feel pretty stupid, but it would save me a few quid! If so, i think thats the only key i got for the engine! i got another one that only works in drivers door. Can they recode my key? or can i do it myself? Quote
ant192 Posted March 24, 2008 Author Report Posted March 24, 2008 Ok pats chip - what does it look like? haven't got the car yet but need to get to it before the garage decides to start charging me for unnecessary work! Quote
ant192 Posted March 25, 2008 Author Report Posted March 25, 2008 No joy, Couldn't find the chip anywhere. Going to try my metal detector and the drive in the morning but i'm not confident. What are my options now? I have just one remote key with no chip in it- how much is it gonna cost? Quote
NikpV Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 I would get a couple of standard keys cut and get fords to program them ( Quote
ant192 Posted March 26, 2008 Author Report Posted March 26, 2008 Unbelievably i found the chip (these things are tiny) on a gravel driveway this morning, put it in the key and it still works! A lucky escape. I still have the misfire on cyl 2 to contend with, might just get the garage to mend it. What's a good price for a fitted coil pack? I assume they have to reset fault codes too. Quote
ant192 Posted March 27, 2008 Author Report Posted March 27, 2008 Thanks for the excellent post MrT. If it is as easy as you have made it sound it would be almost criminal to pay a mechanic to do it! Quote
ant192 Posted March 29, 2008 Author Report Posted March 29, 2008 picked up coil pack from ford (30 quid or so) and fitted it. The engine light did not go out so i disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and since then she feels and sounds better and no engine light after a long drive. Thanks to everyone on this fabulous forum who helped me to sort it. Now to fix all those other problems....... Quote
